Lion sports fall ’06 semester wrap-up

The fall semester is coming to an end, which means the fall sports have recently finished up their seasons here at Texas A&M University-Commerce.

The women’s soccer team finished the season with a 12-8-3 mark, including wins over then-No. 2 Metro State (2-1, OT) and regionally ranked Regis and Barry. The Lions advanced to the championship game of the Lone Star Conference Tournament, where they fell 1-0 to Central Oklahoma.

“I thought we had a challenging season,” said A&M University-Commerce soccer head coach Neil Piper. “We played the toughest schedule in the country and beat some great teams, including the national champions.”

The team loses Celia Cross, Amber Ramoz and Tia Rew to graduation, but return nine starters.

One of those starters, sophomore Melissa DoRemus was named Second Team All-Region by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America.

“I think we should make a run at a conference championship and compete for the NCAA tournament next season,” said Piper.

The A&M-Commerce cross country team had a successful season in many respects, as well.

The women and men runners had their best finish in the first race of the season finishing second and seventh. Neither team finished lower than 24th all season in a race.

“I thought we had a pretty good year,” said A&M-Commerce cross country head coach Pat Ponder. “We had a few key injuries throughout the year that caused some set backs, but overall we had a decent season.”

The cross country team will lose Niki Williams, Andra Bickel and Kara Bickel.

All contributed to the success of the team and were named to the Lone Star Conference Commissioners honor roll in early November.

The women’s volleyball team had a down year finishing with an 11-18 record.

Although the record was not great, the Lions still had three players land on the All-LSC team.

Junior Colleen Favaro notched a first team honor after being named on the second team her freshman and sophomore seasons and junior Wannie Neal and freshman Lauren Flynn got honorable mentions.

A&M-Commerce football team finished the season with the number one ranked defense in the conference and a sound running game, but was only able to finish 5-5. The .500 mark is the second consecutive season with that record.

However, 11 Lion players earned All-LSC recognition. The top spots were named to senior Cliff Edwards who Co-LSC North Division Offensive Back of the Year.

Senior Sean McKinney was named Co-Defensive Lineman of the Year, while senior safety Darvin Peterson earned the Defensive Back of the Year.

Seniors Duane Davis and Corey Goodall joined Edwards on the offensive first team all confererenc squad, while Garnet Smith, Joe Young and L.J. Searcy joined McKinney and Peterson on the defensive first team.

Senior J.R. Satchel and Jack Criss made the second team and senior Danny Cobbin added an honorable mention.
