Women fall short to ACU 83-77, drop third straight

Despite 23 points from senior Kanani Marshal – 18 of which came in the second half and 12 from sophomore Britney Jordan in the second half, the Texas A&M-Commerce women’s basketball team dropped an 83-77 decision to host Abilene Christian on Saturday afternoon at the Moody Coliseum.

Abilene Christian raised their record to 6-0 and blistered the nets for 70.8% shooting in the second half in the win.

The Wildcats’ Alex Guiton scored 21 of her game-high 25 points in the second half to lead ACU.

She was joined in double figures by Kristee Davison, who added 14 (11 in the second half), Audrey Maxwell scored 13, (7 in the second half) and Jody Meyer chipped in 10.

Trailing by as much as nine in the second half, 54-45, with 10:22 left in the contest, the Lions mounted a 15-6 run to tie the contest at 60 with 6:27 remaining.

During the run, Marshal got on track for the Lions after being held to five in the first half, scored seven points to spark Texas A&M-Commerce.

The Lions would get as close as two on three occasions down the stretch but the Wildcats made four of six foul shots down the stretch to close out the contest.

After falling behind 21-16 with 6:13 in the first half, the Lions went on a 9-0 run in the final minutes of the first half; however, the host Wildcats held a 28-27 advantage.

Texas A&M-Commerce forced 12 Abilene Christian turnovers that led to 11 points for the Lions.

Also, in the first 20 minutes, the Lions frontline of Mosley, Short and Evans combined for 18 of the Lions 27 points.

In the first half, the Wildcats were led by twin sisters Jamie and Jody Meyer, who scored seven and six points, respectively.

Jamie scored all of her points from the free-throw line. Her sister, Jody also contributed five rebounds as ACU outrebounded Texas A&M-Commerce, 23-15 in the first half.

Next, the Lions will play only their second home game when they host nationally ranked West Texas A&M on Thursday at 6 p.m. in another Lone Star Conference crossover matchup at the A&M-Commerce Field House.

The Lions will have another home game on Dec. 9 before the winter break against Eastern New Mexico in a LSC crossover game.

While the students will be out for the break, the women will host two more home games on the 19th and 31st against Texas-Tyler and East Texas Baptist.

They will then travel on a two game road stretch for LSC crossover games that will have them facing Tarleton State to begin the new year on the 4th and will then travel to Midwestern State before coming back to the field house on the 11th against Texas Woman’s.
