The Office of Diversity and Cultural Affairs will be sponsoring V.I.S.I.O.N.S. on Thursday, Jan. 25 at 6 p.m. in the Sam Rayburn Memorial Student Center.
“V.I.S.I.O.N.S. is designed to give students new to Texas A&M University-Commerce an opportunity to be introduced to the numerous organizations on campus and find out how to become a part of them,” Robert Dotson, director of The Office of Diversity and Cultural Affairs, said.
V.I.S.I.O.N.S., an acronym that stands for Various Illustrations is held once a semester, generally during the second week of the term, and new students aren’t the only ones that look forward to the program.
“I’m always happy when V.I.S.I.O.N.S. comes around. It’s an opportunity for us to showcase our organization to potential members and other students on campus,” Joanna Mapps, member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated said.
Dotson encourages students to realize that V.I.S.I.O.N.S. isn’t just a “Greek affair.”
“It’s important that the campus recognizes the other organizations that are here on campus and contributions that they make in the campus and community. I think all of the organizations can and often do help students find a niche, it’s just important for them to figure out where that niche lies and seize the opportunity,” Dotson said.
Many new organizations are excited about introducing themselves at V.I.S.I.O.N.S. explaining what their function is.
“I am extremely eager to talk about our initiatives and the programs that we will be putting on as an organization. We are extremely young in our development and V.I.S.I.O.N.S. serves as a platform for us to get our name out there and let people know what we’re about,” Tieranee Jones, president of S.W.A.T. T.E.A.M., a peer-education group at A&M-Commerce said.
“Additionally, I think V.I.S.I.O.N.S. is an opportunity for all students that attend the university to interact with faculty and staff that might participate in the program and it gives all participants to be a part of an out-of-classroom, yet academic program,” Dotson said.
