MySpace. “The biggest thing on the internet right now,” said freshman math major, Heather Stofle.
How many people have a MySpace? “15 percent of the world’s population has a MySpace,” said Dallas/Ft. Worth radio station 106.1 KISSFM in November 2006.
Fifteen percent may seem like a petty number, but in terms of the world’s population, that is more than 10 million people worldwide. “It is the stupidest, best, worst, most amazing thing on the planet,” said sophomore photography major, Michael Lester.
“I don’t have a MySpace. I have not been brainwashed into that. There is too much drama and predators and stupidity. Especially young girls slutting themselves out to get attention from people whose attention does not need to be caught,” said an anonymous source.
NBC Dateline’s Chris Hansen has been showing a MySpace related programming titled “To Catch a Predator”. A cop poses as a 13-year old girl on MySpace to attract surrounding predators or sex offenders. Once the bait is set, the cop proceeds to set up a meeting place. The predator and an actual 13-year-old girl meet up at the NBC set house. The girl usually tends to need to go to the restroom or go change clothes for the hot tub.
While the girl disappears, Chris Hansen appears before the predator with evidence that the predator had sexual intentions towards the minor. The predator usually denies the statements, despite the evidence.
Once Chris Hansen is through talking to the predator, the predator walks outside and the by standing police officers arrest him for sexual intentions with a minor. These predators range from mentally retarded pizza deliverymen from Ohio to rich cardiologists from Miami. “To Catch a Predator” airs on Tuesdays at 9 p.m.
“Once this program started, parents started looking more into what their children were up to,” said senior English major, and father of three, Neil Hargrove.
He added “I know that once I saw this television show, I put a program on my computer that records everything my children do on the computer and on the internet.”
