The Texas A&M University-Commerce Lions continued their winning ways with a commanding victory over East Central 92-59 on Valentine’s Day to push their overall single-season record to 19-8.
The Lions controlled the tempo from the start of the game and held a 14-point lead at the half with a 47-33 lead.
Britney Jordan led the women in the first half with 18 points, followed closely by Katedria Mosley who dropped in 15 and had five rebounds as well.
The second half was much of the same as the Lions continued to stretch their lead with 19 points from Kanani Marshal and 12 from Tradawn Short.
Throughout the game, the Lions were strong on both sides of the ball. Offensively, the Lions shot 46.7 percent from the field and hit 11 three-pointers. Usually only hitting .683 percent from the free throw line for the year, on this night, the women shot 25-28 from the stripe and dominated the boards by out-rebounding the Tigers by 18.
East Central was only able to shoot 26.7 percent from the field only making 8-30 shots.
Jordan had another stellar performance for the team leading the way with 27 points and five assists. Three more Lions hit double-digits on the night with Marshal scoring 25 and five, followed by Mosley with 17 and 16 for Short. Mosley also pulled in 11 rebounds to lead the Lions.
The win moved the Lions Lone Star North Division record to 7-2 and are still in the lead for their first Conference title in school history.
Marshal gets record as Lions win
On Feb. 17, the Lions traveled to Durant, Okla. and defeated the Southeastern Oklahoma State Savage Storm with another double-digit victory 80-65.
The Lions were able to control the first half going into the break with a 12-point lead 37-25.
Jordan and Marshal led the way in the half scoring 16 and 14, respectively. The Lions also controlled the paint with 14 points and scored 10 points off of Savage Storm turnovers.
Marshal was able to follow a good first half with an even better second scoring 16 points to give her a game-high 30 points in addition to her eight rebounds and six assists.
Jordan had another complete game scoring 22 points and had four steals on defense.
Eight three pointers helped Marshal get most of her points, but on her fourth three of the night, Marshal notched the new Lone Star Conference record for three-pointers made.
Lorie Martinez previously held the eight-year record hitting 104 threes in the 1997-1998. Marshal now has hit 109 for the year with two games remaining.
The defense for the women was strong for the second game in a row forcing SOSU into 27 turnovers that the Lions turned into 26 points.
Vivi Nascimento scored 16 points while teammate Felicia Mitchell was close behind with 15 to lead the Savage Storm offense.
The Lions have now improved their single-season wins record to 20-8 and hold a tight grip onto first place in the Lone Star Conference North Division with an 8-2 mark.
Central Oklahoma is only one game back of the Lions lead with a 7-3 record.
The Lions have only one game remaining in the regular season as they play host to Southwestern Oklahoma on Feb. 24 at 2 pm.
