Mens golf swing to third place, women fall to 16th

Sophomore Blake Worden shot a two-under-par 70 to pace a strong Lions charge in the last 18 holes as A&M-Commerce shot a final-round 298 to finish in a three-way tie for third on Tuesday in the Pepsi Crawford-Wade Invitational.

Worden completed the tournament in second place overall and finished just one shot back of eventual champion K.C. Lim from St. Mary’s (Texas).

Lim finished the tournament with a three round total of 217 (73-74-70), while Worden finished at 218 (74-74-70). Worden led all golfers with 36 pars in 54 holes.

St. Mary’s shot a three-round total of 889 to take home the team title.

Southeastern Oklahoma State finished ten shots back at 899, followed by Southwestern Oklahoma State, Henderson State and A&M-Commerce, who all shot 910 for the tournament.

Sophomore Pinkey Hartline shot a three-round 230 (80-72-78) to finish second on the team and in a tie for 26th. Hartline carded a 78 in the third and final round and made seven birdies on par fives for the tournament.

Freshman Chase Johnson finished third on the team and tied for 29th overall by shooting a three-round score of 231 (81-75-75). Johnson carded a three-over 75 in the final round to move into the top 30.

Senior Andy Carter shot a 235 (81-79-75) for the tournament and recorded his finest round on the final day by registering a three-over-par 75. Senior Ryan Jaco posted a three-round total of 236 on scores of 78, 78, and 80. Carter and Jaco finished tied for 46th and tied for 49th, respectively.

Freshman individuals Brian Pearce and Sean Williams each had quality outings. Pearce finished in a tie for 29th overall as he shot a three-day total of 231 (76-73-82).

Williams carded an even par round of 72 on Tuesday as he placed 63rd overall and finished with a three-round total of 241 (85-84-72).

A&M-Commerce ended the tournament first in pars (153) and par 5 scoring (15-under), and fourth in birdies made (32).

The Lions are back in action on March 12 and 13 as they travel to Ada, Okla. to compete in the Oak Hills Spring Classic.

The Texas A&M University-Commerce women’s golf team wrapped up play on Tuesday at the St. Edward’s Spring Invitational at The Golf Club at Circle C.

The Lions finished tied for 16th with Newman as the host Hilltoppers rallied from a five-stroke deficit on day one to move ahead of first-day leader Northeastern State for an eight-stroke victory over runner up Tarleton State, who shot a 321 on the final day.

For the two days, the Lions shot a 717 (361-356), 73 strokes behind St. Edward’s.

Senior Adi Attaway-Bryant led Texas A&M-Commerce with a top 20 finish, tying for 18th with a two-day total of 164 (81-83).

Freshman Heather Pantalion made a seven-stroke improvement in day two to finish tied for 60th overall and a two-day total of 175 (91-84). Sophomore Jamie Gililland shot a 186 (91-95) to tie for 78th and sophomore Ali Tanner was tied for 87th with a 192 (98-84).

Drury’s Tonya Choate was the medalist, winning the tournament by four strokes over St. Edward’s Jacqueline Struck. Choate recorded a two-day total of 151 (75-76) for the victory.

Texas A&M-Commerce will be back in action on March 19-20, when they host the Pepsi Lady Lion Invitational at the Tanglewood Country Club in Pottsboro.
