Wait for DVD release with The Reaping

RATING: 2 of 4–MILD

Director: Stephen HopkinsCast: Hilary Swank, David Morrissey, AnnaSophia Robb, Idris Elba and Stephen ReaRating: R, for violence, disturbing images and some sexuality.Release Date: April 5, 2007

This film stars Hilary Swank as a scientist who delights in disproving religious phenomenon. She is confronted with a mystery that she cannot dispute when she discovers a town that seems to be suffering from God’s plagues.

Overall, this film is much better than I originally anticipated and held my attention throughout.

One of the main selling points for this film are the twists and turns that are found within the plot. This keeps the audience’s interest and adds dimension to an otherwise normal plot.

Another great thing about this film is the special effects. The plagues are brought to life when the CG is added into the movie. Audience members, religious or not, will not be disappointed with the depiction of God’s plagues.

The swamp filled with blood is amazing to see as are the plague of the locusts, which is intriguing and really creepy.

One downside to this film is that it doesn’t really classify as a horror movie as the previews lead audience members to believe. There are certain parts within the film that do make viewers jump, but on the whole, this film is much more of a thriller than a horror flick.

The acting is acceptable on average, though not outstanding. Hilary Swank does a good job, as does her partner. The rest of the cast is comical at times as they “suffer” in disbelief that God is doing this to their town.

I would recommend that people either go see this movie at a matinee showing or wait until a dollar theatre showing or catch it on DVD.
