Two first half goals by Mayra Torres of McNeese State led the Cowgirls past Texas A&M University-Commerce, 3-2 in a non-conference contest on Sunday.
The Lions (1-1) rose to the occasion against the Division I foe throughout the contest.
McNeese State out-shot the Lions, 25-8, in the win; however, the Lions defense led by sophomore goalkeeper Jennifer Alvarado made six saves in the defeat.
Despite trailing 2-0 early, the A&M-Commerce offensive attack continued to challenge the Cowgirls defense. In the 38th minute, the Lions capitalized on a corner kick from freshman Megan Monroe that found senior Bailey Geels, who headed in her third goal of the season to trim the McNeese State lead to 2-1.
Weather played its way into the mix as lightning and rainhalted action; however, McNeese State added to its lead in the second half in the 59th minute when Alana Glynn scored on a header, which proved to be the game-winning goal.
The Lions got back on the board when sophomore Meagan Lasley scored on a rebound in the 84th minute for the final margin.
On Thursday Aug. 30, the Lions were at home to face Ouachita Baptist University, but due to inclement weather for the second straight game, the team was forced to reschedule.
A&M-C will return home Sept. 14 to play against Incarnate Word at 4 p.m.
Next, the Lions will travel to Florida to face two Sunshine Star Conference foes in Miami. A&M-Commerce will take on Tampa on Friday, Nov. 7 at 2 p.m and Barry on Saturday, Nov. 9 at 12:30 p.m.
