I’ve been following the music of August Arthur (or Scott depending on what point in his career you’re talking about) Bondy for years now.
Bondy got his start in the music business when his first band, Verbena, was signed to Merge Records after a 4-track demo circulated. Shortly after, a certain Dave Grohl (Nirvana and Foo Fighters) took a liking to the band. Grohl had them tour with the Foo Fighters as an opener, got them signed to a major label, and produced their second record called, “Into the Pink.”
Verbena released their third and final record entitled, “La Musica Negra,” in the summer of 2003 and disbanded shortly thereafter.
Four years later, the Alabama-native, A.A. Bondy has returned and released the best record of 2007 with his debut, “American Hearts.”
Yes, I just called it the best record of 2007. That’s not open for debate either. Unless Kurt Cobain and John Lennon come back from the dead and start putting out new music by the year’s end, you will not be able to convince me otherwise.
Bondy pretty much covers everything imaginable with “American Hearts.” Guns, religion, love, sorrow, death, life, hope, murder, drugs, war – it’s all there in a very beautiful, minimalist approach. It reminds me of being a child and it is easy to imagine these songs being played at dusk on an old wooden porch in Alabama.
A.A. Bondy to music is what Jesus is to Christianity, and the majority of music lovers are going to be condemned to music hell, forever damned to listen to the likes of Nickelback and Toby Keith for not being aware of it.
Save yourself!
