Human Resources executives are encouraging college students to get a jump on building their professional wardrobe. They warn that the time is now to start forming a work look, but most of us have no idea where to start.
This week, I’ve met with employers, professors and employees to get the low-down on appropriate work attire.
I’ve taken their advice – added my own personal touch- and developed a list that will put you on the right track to building a wardrobe that’s both stylish and suitable for the office.
When it comes to building a wardrobe, it’s essential to realize that pieces made of good-quality fabrics that will transition from season-to-season are the key to having a lasting professional wardrobe. Don’t be afraid to invest in classic-and maybe a little more pricier-pieces.
Below are the pieces you’ll need to build a fantastic, fashionable and authoritative professional wardrobe:
The suit:
JCPenney and Target are stocked with a variety of suits at reasonable prices for women. Here are a few tips when shopping for suits:
A pant suit is pretty standard in all industries. A straight-leg pant with a fitted jacket works on most body types. Opt for neutral colors-black, gray, navy or brown.
Once you have a pant suit in your arsenal, pick up a matching skirt to pair with the jacket to mix up the look.
Men should also invest in a nicely tailored suit. The same rules apply. K&G Fashion offers an array of suits-with tailors in the stores-and they have sales throughout the year.
Shirts:
After you’ve purchased the suit, add two or three button-down shirts that fit well. This is where you mix and match your colors, but make sure to pick up one in white-it looks good with anything.
Separates:
Next add separates to build around your base suit. A turtleneck sweater for fall or a sleeveless one for the warmer months is a must-have purchase.
Buy a few more shirts in the colors of the season.Add a blazer that will pair well with a pair of trousers.
A wide-leg trouser is flattering on all body types and if you’re trying to look taller, pinstripes automatically elongate the leg. Stock up on slacks for the days a suit isn’t called for.
This is where the majority of your wardrobe budget should go-stock up on separates. Retailers like New York & Company have basic separates at affordable prices in classic cuts.
The Extras:
Pick shoes that are comfortable and stylish. A classic pump black is a must. Think about the colors that you’ve chosen and pick the colors of your shoes accordingly. For men, leather is the preferred material for shoes. Thicker, tougher leather will give off the best shine. You should never sacrifice comfort for style!
A durable bag or tote is vital in completing your look. Messengers are standard for men and a large tote will allow women to load their office documents into the bag along with personal items.
Jewelry should be kept at a minimum. But know the pulse of the industry you’re trying to break into. That should help you in deciding what’s appropriate or not when it comes to jewelry.
Ties and cuff-links add on the finishing touches for men. When it comes to ties, this is where your imagination can run wild. Scarves do the same thing for women.
Wrap-up
Now that you have the tips for building your wardrobe, here’s some advice to put it all together:
If your nails aren’t groomed well, they’re dirty or too flashy, it won’t matter how good you look. This goes for men too!
•Fit is key!
•Find a tailor, jewelry repair person, and dry cleaner that you can trust.
•When in doubt, don’t wear it.
•Great skin is always your best “accessory.”
•Stick to a low-maintenance hairdo.
