Soccer trounces LSC opponents to start Division play

Sophomore Meagan Lasley scored twice and assisted on two more to lead the Texas A&M University-Commerce women’s soccer team to a 4-0 shutout of East Central on Sunday afternoon at the A&M-Commerce Soccer Complex.

A&M-Commerce (6-5, 2-0 LSC) got on the board in the ninth minute when Chelsey Haight picked up a loose ball in the lower left corner after a pass from junior Melissa DoRemus and Lasley led to the early lead.

The Tigers (4-6-2, 1-2 LSC) collapsed on the Lions defense in the 18th minute, but sophomore goalkeeper Jennifer Alvarado and senior defender Erika Bonola denied a pair of opportunities by ECU’s Heather Martin. Alvarado rose to the occasion again, in the 22nd minute, punching away a shot by Shannon Mackin.

The Lions scored a season-high three goals in the second 45 minutes. A&M-Commerce extended its lead to 2-0 on reserve goalkeeper Christie Sarginson in the 65th minute. Haight went from the left side and made a pass to Whitney Hancock on the right, who found an open Lasley for a shot to the upper left corner for the goal.

65 seconds later, A&M-Commerce added to its lead when Geels scored on a breakaway from Lasley to put the Lions in front 3-0.

The Lions got another breakaway goal in the 73rd minute as Lasley added her second goal of the contest on a series of passes from sophomore Lacy Alexander and Bonola for the final margin.

In the win, Alvarado recorded her third shutout of the season with five saves and Bailey Geels led an A&M-Commerce attack that out shot the Tigers, 23-10.

Next, Texas A&M-Commerce is on the road at Southwestern Oklahoma on Friday at 4 pm.

Senior Bailey Geels scored on two headers and assisted on a goal to lead Texas A&M-Commerce to a 4-1 win over Northeastern State in the Lone Star Conference opener.

The Lions out shot the Riverhawks, 33-9, in the win. Geels had a season-high 12 shots, including seven on goal in the win for A&M-Commerce. In addition, A&M-Commerce head coach Neil Piper extends his career record to 8-1-1 in Lone Star Conference openers.

Geels capitalized on a pair of passes from sophomore Meagan Lasley for the early tallies. In the third minute, Geels went unmarked by the NSU defender for a header to give the Lions an early 1-0 lead.

The Geels and Lasley tandem partnered up for the second goal of the contest in the 11th minute. Lasley sent a corner kick feed into Geels for the goal to extend the margin to 2-0.

A&M-Commerce extended its lead to 3-0 when freshman Chelsey Haight scored on a break-away goal in the 39th minute for her second goal of the season.

In the 70th minute, Northeastern State avoided the shutout when Dani Watson found a loose ball after a free kick by Ashley Badeen to trim the A&M-Commerce lead to 3-1.

The Lions continued to attack against the NSU defense. Geels returned the favor to Lasley in the 83rd minute for the final A&M-Commerce goal to extend the margin back to three, 4-1.
