Soccer Lions split pair of LSC games

Two late first half goals led No. 22 Central Oklahoma to a 6-0 win over Texas A&M-Commerce in Sunday afternoon in Edmond.

With the win, the Bronchos (10-3-1, 4-0 LSC) extend their Lone Star Conference unbeaten streak to 29 games and snap a three-game Lions winning streak in the process.

In the win, UCO out shot A&M-Commerce, 27-to-6. The loss drops the Lions to 7-6 overall and 3-1 in the Lone Star Conference.

UCO’s Kasey Mahaffrey scored her first of two goals when she broke through the Lions defense for a breakaway in the 39th minute to end the scoreless tie for the first goal of the afternoon on a shot from 30 yards out.

The Bronchos got on the board 1:36 later when Carmen Davis found the back of the net to give UCO a 2-0 lead at the intermission. Central Oklahoma added to its lead with four second half goals, including two from Rebecca Sparks. Bronchos’ goalkeeper Carly Fischer made four saves in 90 minutes for her fourth shutout of the season.

A&M-Commerce sophomore Meagan Lasley led an A&M-Commerce attack with three shots, all of which came on goal in the defeat.

The Lions return to the field on Wednesday when they host Texas Woman’s in a Lone Star Conference contest at 4 pm at the A&M-Commerce Soccer Complex.

The Texas A&M-Commerce women’s soccer team extended its winning streak to three games with a 3-1 win over host Southwestern Oklahoma.

A&M-Commerce (7-5, 3-0 LSC) jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first 45 minutes when junior Melissa DoRemus scored her second goal of the season and senior Bailey Geels added her team-leading ninth goal on the season with an assist from graduate student Erika Bonola.

Southwestern Oklahoma (0-12, 0-3 LSC) cut the lead to 2-1 in the second half before the Lions added to their lead when Meagan Lasley scored on a pass from Bailey Geels for the final margin.
