The jury is still out on who exactly caused the lights to go out in Georgia, but it is apparently clear who can¬-after decades in the music business-still top charts with a debuting album. That artist is fancy redheaded country diva, Reba McEntire.
Her 25th studio-recorded album, “Reba Duets”, released Sept. 18, 2007, features her already well-known singing, coupled with big names, such as Kelly Clarkson, Kenny Chesney, Faith Hill and that hip-hop superstar, who no one can get enough of, Justin Timberlake.
Selling more than 300,000 copies in its first week, “Reba Duets” has been McEntire’s best selling album of her prolific career. Coming second to that is her 1992 album, “Its Your Call,” which sold 124,000 in its first week.
The first released single was the song, “Because of You”, with American Idol Kelly Clarkson. She and Clarkson were featured on “Crossroads”, a show from the Country Music Television channel.
Listening to the album, I was reminded just how talented McEntire is, and was surprised to hear her voice, as twang-filled as it is, harmonized with voices like Justin Timberlake’s.
The “Queen of Country” and the new “Prince of Pop” recorded “The Only Promise That Remains,” a song that says no matter how bad the world around two lovers gets, the promise of love remains. The words and delivery of the lyrics could possibly make for an uncomfortable scene given the age difference between the artists.
On the other hand, it worked for Ashton and Demi.
Given the sales that the eleven-song album has accumulated, “Reba Duets,” seems to have lit up the music world and reminded them just how powerful the name Reba McEntire is.
Reba’s release of “Reba Duets” beat out both Kanye West and 50 Cent in its first week when it took the number one spot on The Billboard 200.
