Alumni Relations and the Texas A&M University-Commerce Homecoming Committee added another event to the Homecoming calendar this year.
Last Wednesday, Oct. 10, the first annual “Meet the Nominees” gave the Homecoming candidates an opportunity to socialize with the campus and display the qualities they possess to be Homecoming King and Queen.
“I think the event was a success. It allowed the nominees to step outside of their box and meet with different students on campus. It was great to campaign to other groups and not just the members in the organizations that nominated you,” Kentrel Phillips, undergraduate and Homecoming nominee, said.
“Meet the Nominees” was created to expose the nominees to a broader number of students on campus. Rodney Baker, Student Chair of the Homecoming Committee, said that the event helps build relationships and friendships with members of other organizations.
“Members of the Homecoming Committee and I thought that the nominees needed an opportunity to meet students, inform them of their accomplishments?-?academically and socially?-?and deliver their own message to the student body. At the end of the day, all of the networking and interacting with each other makes the campus a cohesive environment,” Baker said.
Derryle Peace, director of Alumni Relations, also thought the event was a success.
“This event just added to the excitement and energy of Homecoming,” Peace said. “It was great for the nominees to hone their leadership and social skills while networking with the students on campus.”
