Soccer goes 1-1 over weekend

With the game tied at 1-1, West Texas A&M forward Elizabeth Markussen scored twice in less than two minutes en route to a 4-1 win over host Texas A&M University-Commerce on Sunday afternoon at the A&M-Commerce Soccer Complex.

The loss drops the Lions to 8-9 overall and 4-4 in the Lone Star Conference. With the win, the Lady Buffs raise their record to 11-5 overall and 5-4 in the Lone Star Conference.

The Lions’ missed a pair of early opportunities – a penalty kick and two headers – that came up short.

West Texas got on the board first when Miriam Rodriguez picked up the bouncing ball and fired a shot over the head of the A&M-Commerce goalkeeper for the early 1-0 advantage at the 24:04 mark.

46 seconds later, sophomore Meagan Lasley got the equalizer for A&M-Commerce with a breakaway pass from junior Melissa DoRemus to the lower left corner, tying the match at 1-1. For Lasley, it is her ninth goal of the season.

Prior to the match, A&M-Commerce honored seniors – Erika Bonola, Cheryl Canavan, Bailey Geels and Tamara Geels.

The Lions will close out the regular season with a trip to Abilene Christian on Friday, Oct. 26 at 4 pm and at Angelo State on Sunday, Oct. 28 at 1 p.m.

The Texas A&M-Commerce women’s soccer team beat the Eastern New Mexico defense on a pair of goals for a 2-0 win on Friday afternoon at the A&M-Commerce Soccer Complex.

A&M-Commerce (8-8 overall, 4-3 Lone Star Conference) sophomore Meagan Lasley put the Lions in front 1-0 when she beat ENMU goalkeeper Stephanie Sanchez on a 1-on-1 play in the 25th minute that bounced off the lower right post and into the goal.

After missing an early opportunity in the 60th minute, senior Bailey Geels scored in the 75th minute on a header when sophomore Lacy Alexander fed her a pass on a 30-yard free kick for the 2-0 advantage.
