One poncho, four ways

To be a true fall fashionista, you must master the art of layering. If you have the key pieces for fall you can be warm and chic when the winds are gusty and the temperatures are blistering cold.

As with the crisp white button-down featured last month, I’ve taken one essential piece for the season and assembled four outfits. This month’s look will highlight the poncho: a warm fall must-have. Styled correctly, a poncho can add depth to an otherwise simple outfit.

Preppy

Layered over a brightly colored long-sleeved tee, the gray oversized poncho is a perfect compliment to a miniskirt or plaid shorts. Keep those legs warm with a pair of opaque tights and add ankle boots to finish the look.

Casual

On those days that you don’t have the time to put together an elaborate outfit, throw on a poncho over a black turtleneck and skinny jeans.

Add pointed-toe stiletto pumps, a chunky necklace and an oversized clutch and you’ll move to the head of the class.

Eclectic

Layered over patterned tights and mod ankle boots, the poncho serves as a tunic and looks amazingly stylish. Add another dimension to the look by adding bright accessories.

Professional

A poncho can be worn in business-casual occasions too. Just layer it over a button-down and pair with a wide-leg trouser and a simple black pump, the look becomes classic and of-the-moment at the same time.
