Diwali Dancin’

Music and dancing filled Texas A&M University-Commerce’s Texas Ballroom Friday night as the Indian Student Association celebrated Diwali Night.

The event began with a prayer song followed by a video presentation, which explains the historical significance behind Diwali. Those in attendance were entertained with a classical dance and fashion show.

During the intermission, students served sweets and laddu, just like turkey and dressing is served during Thanksgiving and Christmas. In Indian culture, these items are usually just prepared during this time of celebration.

Diwali is one of the most important celebrations in India and derives its name from the words “deepavali,” meaning light, and “avali,” meaning a row, or row of lights. Diyas are small earthen lamps that welcome the goddess of wealth and prosperity into people’s homes.
