Men’s basketball falls to UTA, 85-62, in exhibition matchup

Host Texas-Arlington shot 50 percent from the field to lead the host Mavericks to an 85-62 win over Texas A&M University-Commerce on Thursday night in an exhibition game.

The Division I foe, University of Texas-Arlington shot 58.8 percent from the field and outscored the Lions, 52 to 20 in the first 20 minutes. In the second half, the Lions shot 50 percent from the field and outscored the Mavericks, 42 to 33.

Three Lions scored in double figures as senior Scooby Johnson scored a team-high 18 on a seven-for-eight effort from the field and a three-for-six effort from the free-throw line. He was joined in double figures by freshman Brent Stanton, who added 11 and senior Lance Jackson chipped in 10.

All five starters for the Mavericks scored in double digits; in addition to a game-high 19 from Tommy Moffitt on off the bench. UTA out rebounded the Lions, 42-to-30.

Next, the 2007-08 season will get underway as the Lions travel to Stephenville to face the University of Tampa at 5:30 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 16 and against Palm Beach Atlantic on Nov. 17 at 5:30 p.m. Both games will be carried live on KETR (88.9 FM) and www.ketr.org.
