New faces for A&M-Commerce basketball teams grab weekly Lone Star Conference honors

Melissa Bratton and Scooby Johnson were both named Lone Star Conference North Division Players of the Week for their efforts during games last week against Northeastern State and Southeastern Oklahoma.

Bratton posted her first double-double of her career, with 17 points and 11 rebounds in the Lions’ 78-74 win over SOSU on Saturday. Eight of Bratton’s 11 rebounds came on the offensive side against SOSU.

On the defensive side, Bratton played a key role in the SOSU game, when she guarded SOSU’s leading scorer Jessica Hocker, and limited Hocker to 12 points, her third lowest of the season.

Bratton is the second Lion to receive the weekly honor in 2007-08, the first being teammate Britney Jordan.

The A&M-C women have won their last three in a row and as off Jan. 29, they are 14-5 overall, and 3-1 in the LSC North Division.

Johnson shot 64 percent from the field and scored 20+ points in back to back wins over Northeastern State and Southeastern Oklahoma State last week.

Johnson has scored in double digits in every game this season for the Lions. He leads the LSC in scoring, averaging 20.1 points per game, and is also among the top-10 in the LSC in field goal percentage, offensive rebounds, and rebounding.

The player of week honor is the second this season for Johnson, the first of which he earned during the week of Jan. 3.

The A&M-C men are on a three-game winning streak, and as of Jan. 29, they are 8-11 overall, and 3-1 in the LSC North Divison.
