‘The Big Event’ hits A&M-C

Slated for April 5 from 8 a.m. to noon, ‘The Big Event’ community service day is set to kick off.

In this single day, University organizations, students and business in Commerce strive to complete projects on campus and throughout the town.

“We encourage all the businesses that are going to be involved or anyone who is going to be involved to make sure that the project they have can be completed in one day’s work,” Jennifer Ratliff, coordinator for ‘The Big Event’ said.

Sponsored by Campus Activities at A&M-Commerce, City of Commerce and the Commerce Chamber of Commerce, it will allow students and citizens the opportunity to lend a helping hand and see the results of their efforts.

A luncheon will be held at the City Park with entertainment and recognition of all the projects completed at the end of the day.

“We really stress and hope that the student organizations here on campus will put a big effort into it because it’s basically trying to bond the university and Commerce together,” Ratliff said.

According to Ratliff, anyone wanting to be involved can participate, whether they be a single person, or organization.

Anyone wanting to be involved should contact the Campus Activities Office at 903-886-5816 to register their organization’s and provide the name, phone number or e-mail address of one contact person, so that they may contact the organization at a later date with specific project information. The deadline for registration is set for March 28, but no one will be turned away after that date.

“It was a great way to see your work, when you go out there and you plant something, or paint something or put a brick here. You’re able to see that and that’s good … your hands at work … it’s better to give than to receive,” Ratliff said.

The service projects for this year were discussed at the meeting with the City of Commerce and will soon be shared with all involved.
