Graduate students have enough to worry about without wondering if the work they’re doing will help them graduate.
Graduate advisers are available to help graduate students stay on track for graduation. But whom can the advisers turn to when they need help?
Texas A&M University-Commerce has solved this problem by creating the Graduate Advisers Roundtable.
“It’s an opportunity for the graduate school and advisers to come together to discuss a range of topics relevant to graduate advisers,” Dr. Jon Travis, assistant dean of graduate studies and research, said.
Travis will be co-chairing the Graduate Advisers Roundtable, alongside Dr. Allan Headley, dean of graduate studies and research.
This year’s Graduate Advisers Roundtable will be at 1:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Mar. 5 in the Texas Ballroom of the Memorial Student Center.
“We try to do one per year,” Travis said. “We weren’t able to do one last year.”
According to Travis, except for last year, the event has taken place for about four to five years.
“We encourage all graduate advisers to attend, in addition to department heads and deans,” Travis said.
He said topics would include preparing graduate students for graduation checkout, making sure students take the right classes, and going over students’ theses and dissertations.
“Our goal is to help advisers do the best job they can to ensure graduate students complete everything on time,” Travis said.
