I had the prvilege of interviewing one of the up-and-coming sons of Greenville, Matthew Labrot. This Greenville Christian School graduate has finished recording his debut album and is expecting a May release.
Cody Giles: How long have you been singing?
Matthew Labrot: I think since I was around four.
CG: What is your greatest inspiration?
ML: My faith in God.
CG: Do you write all of your music?
ML: Yes I do. I recently co-wrote a song with a friend of mine. It was cool to get someone else’s input. I’ll definitely be doing that again soon.
CG: Where do you go physically and mentally when you write your songs?
ML: I usually write them in my room. A lot of my songs are about things from my past. When I’m writing, I try to go back and relive them. That’s the best way I know to get the lyrics flowing.
CG: Who do most people say you sound most like?
ML: John Mayer. They don’t give me a reason. I think he’s the first male solo artist that comes to mind to a lot of people.
CG: If you had to pick your most memorable concert experience, what would it be? Why?
ML: That would have to be the first time I heard people in the crowd singing along with me. It’s memorable because I realized people knew my songs!
CG: In a nutshell, why do you sing?
ML: It’s cheaper than therapy and Prozac! Just kidding. It is, though, a good way for me to deal with everything that happens in my life.
CG: What band would you rate as the greatest of all time?
ML: Underoath. They’re my personal favorite because their passion really comes across in their music. They’re not afraid to stand up for what they believe in. And, Aaron’s just ridiculously good!
