The Texas A&M University-Commerce women’s golf team was the only team in the field to make an improvement in Tuesday’s final round of the Lady Rattler Roundup in San Antonio. The Lions cut 14 strokes off Monday’s opening round en route to a 10th-place finish and a two-day total of 742 (378-364).
Three members of the five-person lineup for A&M-C made strides of improvement, including freshman Mallory Kempf, who made an astounding 23-stroke improvement from a 110 to an 87.
In addition to Kempf, sophomore Heather Pantalion shot an 89 in the final round for a two-day total of 182 (93-89) en route to a tie for 37th-place finish.
Also lowering their score in Tuesday’s final round was freshman Jewell Malick, who was playing in her first collegiate tournament, who finished in 58th with a 236 (119-117). Junior Jamie Gililland tied for 34th with a 179 (87-92) and freshman Megan Benites shot a 184 (88-96) and tied for 42nd.
Tarleton State won its sixth tournament in a row as they captured the team title with a 638 (313-325) for a 27-stroke victory over its closest competitor as the TexAnns had four golfers in the top seven. Stephanie Bird of Northeastern State was the individual champion by nine strokes with a 36-hole total of 146 and two-over par.

The A&M-C women’s golf team is in 11th place following Monday’s opening round of the Lady Rattler Roundup hosted by St. Mary’s University.
The Lions shot a first round 378 and are led by junior Jamie Gililland, who is tied for 30th. Gililland shot an opening round 87 to lead A&M-Commerce.
Lone Star Conference rival Tarleton State leads the team race after the first round with a 313. The TexAnns, who have won five tournaments in a row, have four golfers in the top eight in the 60-person field. The individual leader, Stephanie Bird of Northeastern State, who shot an opening round 74 for a three-stroke lead.
A&M-C freshman Megan Benites is tied for 33rd with an 88 and sophomore Heather Pantalion is 46th with a 93. Freshmen Mallory Kempf and Jewell Malick are 56th (110) and 58th (119), respectively,
A&M-C will return to the course at the ECU Spring Classic on March 10-11th at the same site of the Lone Star Conference Tournament in Thackerville, Okla.
