The Texas A&M University-Commerce women’s soccer team opened the 2008 season with a 4-2 win over No. 12 Drury on Thursday afternoon at the A&M-Commerce Soccer Complex.
Senior Melissa DoRemus scored two goals and sophomore Chelsey Haight scored a goal and had two assists in the win for the Lions, who remain undefeated in program history in their season opener.
Lasley ended a scoreless tie when she found the back of the net on a header after receiving a pass from Alex Germain and Haight in the 52nd minute. A little over three minutes later, A&M-Commerce extended its lead to 2-0 when DoRemus took a pass from the heel of Lasley, who had just picked up a crossing pass from Haight for the lead.
Lasley was involved again in the Lions scoring when junior Lacy Alexander got ahead of the Panthers’ defense for a goal in the 59th minute to put the Lions in front 3-0.
The Panthers came back with a pair of goals by Nicole Williams and Mandi Little to trim the A&M-Commerce lead to one, 3-2, with just under 15 minutes remaining in the contest.
The Lions came back with an insurance goal as Haight took advantage of a 1-on-1 play with Drury goalkeeper Jessie Sanderson with a shot to the top left corner of the goal for the final margin in the 77th minute. Lasley continued to anchor an A&M-Commerce attack in the final minutes of the contest with two more shots in
the 81st minute.
The season continued with another win for the lady lions against Dallas Baptist University.
A touch pass from junior Meagan Lasley to sophomore Chelsey Haight in the 114th minute led visiting Texas A&M-Commerce to a 2-1 double overtime
victory over host Dallas Baptist on Monday night.??
A&M-Commerce 2-0 found itself trailing for the first time in the young season, but with its only shot in the second extra period the Lions got the game-winning goal from Lasley.
Lasley was around the goal as she tallied her first goal of the early season to tie the contest at 1 in the 66th minute on a rebound shot after an attack by junior Lacy Alexander.??
Dallas Baptist 0-2 got on the board first in the seventh minute of the contest on a crossing shot from Brittany Layne following a crossing pass from Allyson Bales for the early advantage.??
In the contest, the Lions were outshot by the host Patriots, 12-9. Six of the shots were on goal for the Lions attack compared to five for DBU. Both Haight and Lasley each finished the contest with five shots to lead the Lions.
Junior goalkeeper Taylor Jordan had four saves in the win for A&M-Commerce; meanwhile, her DBU counterpart Haley Corbell also made four saves.??
The Lions take a two-game winning streak on the road and to California, this weekend. A&M-Commerce will face Cal. State-Los Angeles on Thursday at 7:00 p.m. and UC-San Diego on Sunday
at 7:00 p.m
Both teams, last year, advanced to the NCAA Tournament and Cal. State-Los Angeles advanced to the third round.
The lady lions return home Sept. 9 for a game against Harding University and will be taking on St. Mary’s University of Texas on Sept. 9. Come out and support your team as they quest for a championship.
