First United Methodist Church makes new changes to facility

The First United Methodist Church of Commerce has recently completed new additions to their fellowship. The recent expansion will help the church provide more service to the community as well as the University.

The expansion includes a facility large enough for community events, outreach programs, group games, church meetings, meals, and welcome area. With the new area, the FUMC also plans to expand the college/youth level activities and services.

The FUMC also welcomes a new associate pastor and campus minister Rev. Aleze Fulbright. Fulbright, who has only been in Commerce since June, is the bridge that brings FUMC and the campus together by uniting the students and church through the Wesleyan Campus Ministry.

The WCM provides many opportunities for Texas A&M University-Commerce students worship, fellowship and even eat. Every Wednesday at noon and Thursday at 12:30, the ministry provides a free home-cooked meal, which gives students the chance to meet other students, as well as get to know the folks at the campus ministry.

“It’s a time of fellowship and a time for students to come in and have a free meal, as well as hang out and listen to music. There’s not a service during that time, so it gives the students a chance to get to know the campus ministry,” Fulbright said. “It’s a chance for students to get to know the church and nourish their faith.”

Every other Friday night the WCM also offers Groundwerks; a coffee shop of sorts with old-fashioned game playing and open mic.

“My hope is maybe I can bring a sense of youthfulness. I’m in my early thirties and so when students see me they think ‘oh you’re a pastor’ you don’t have to be old and gray and miss opportunities. if you’re called, you can do something now,” Fulbright said.

Fulbright encourages students to “Come and see.” The Wesleyan Campus Ministry has been on campus since the 1960’s and Rev. Fulbright hopes to shed a new light on campus ministry by creating more contemporary services and university aimed activities. Currently, the WCM offers College/Young adult class Sunday’s at 9:45 at the First United Methodist Church Commerce.

Wednesday Study Hall at Wesleyan at 7 pm with dinner and a chance to study…or procrastinate. Regenerate on Tuesdays at 7:30 pm with a contemporary service and finally on every other Friday Groundwerks coffee house and music starting at 9pm. The WCM also has a Facebook group that gives those interested the chance to see who’s already hanging out.
