The National Association of Colored Women’s Club hosted a membership tea Tuesday for those interested in becoming members. The tea was an informal meeting to help those interested in becoming a member with filling out their applications and giving a brief overview of the club.
Tea began with a prayer, as the club has very strong Christian values, and then a presentation of the organization’s national and local history.
The club first came to Texas A&M University-Commerce in 1997 by way of Brenda Thomas and has been helping out the University and Commerce community ever since.
In years past, the club has visited area nursing homes and animal shelters and participated in keeping the highways clean.
The Children’s Museum in Commerce also benefits from the NACWC because they help assemble exhibits and clean up the museum.
Also, the NACWC puts together fundraisers to help local families pay for bills and school supplies. One such fundraiser is the annual “Bachelor/
Bachelorette Bid” which takes place the entire week of Oct. 6. In the bid, people will be auctioned off to the highest bidder to help them with any project or activity the bidder needs them to do for the week. It is part of the club’s emphasis on community service.
Each November, the NACWC is host to a Thanksgiving social where they provide free food to those in need.
Brittany Eatman, who has been a member of the NACWC for four years, and an officer for three, has nothing but positive feelings for the Thanksgiving social. She said her first Thanksgiving social has been her most memorable moment since joining the organization.
“It felt so good to help people out and to have a fellowship with other people,” Eatman said.
The NACWC also cooperates with other campus organizations with similar goals and interests, such as Alpha Phi Alpha.
“It’s a great organization that is Christian-based with principles that others don’t usually put first,” Eatman said. “I love being an officer.”
The NACWC currently has 11 active members, and more than 30 people attended the membership tea to hear more information and fill out applications.
All applicants are required to maintain a grade point average of at least 2.3, be enrolled in 12 credit hours and be in good standing with the University. Coupled with those requirements, all applicants must write an essay about what community service means to them.
