After dropping the first set, the Texas A&M University-Commerce Lions roared back to win the next three games to take a 19-25, 26-24, 25-14, 25-18 victory over the Texas A&M-Kingsville Javelinas in Lone Star Conference play on Saturday afternoon.
“After our abysmal first game, we cleaned up our errors and were able to play to our abilities,” said Lions head coach Mark Pryor. “Committing 13 unforced errors in one game makes it difficult to be successful.”
A&M-Commerce (9-6, 3-1) overcame the errors on Saturday and have now won six out of their last eight matches. The victory also equals the Lions’ win total from 2007.
Amy Addison recorded 14 kills and a .345 hitting percentage, Alyssa Oberle slammed 10 kills, Perla Faudoa collected 37 assists and Lauren Flynn tallied 27 digs to lead the Lions.
The Javelinas (3-11, 1-3) opened the first set on a 4-0 run and never looked back, but the Lions countered in the second and slipped past A&M-Kingsville after Oberle notched a kill and an ace to tie the match.
Faudoa’s four kills and nine assists helped the A&M-Commerce win the third set and a 9-3 spurt midway through the fourth gave the Lions control before Rachel Lance iced the game and the match with a kill.
Shaday Smith paced A&M-Kingsville with 16 kills and Sha Tramble followed 10. Courtney Attebery finished with 20 assists and Tara Grier added 14 digs.
A&M-Commerce will travel to Arkadelphia, Ark. to play Ouachita Baptist at 6 p.m. on Friday and follow with a 10 a.m. match against Henderson St. on Saturday.
