Health Services welcomes director

The Department of Student Health and Services has welcomed a new director, Shelly Matikiewicz.

“I am very excited about this position. There is a lot of room for growth and need for health and wellness education in addition to treating students health concerns,” Matikiewicz said.

Matikiewicz has been on campus for over five years and previously served as associate director of campus wellness. She feels that her previous experience will help her in her new venture.

“Knowing and working with students so closely in the past has allowed me to find out what issues and concerns our students are facing,” Matikiewicz said.

The director oversees the operation of Student Health Services from staffing to budgeting and programming.

“My overall job is to make sure we are providing quality, affordable services that will serve our students and better our campus,” Matikiewicz said.

Student Health Services offers primary health care services, including treatment of illnesses, injuries, mental health and wellness issues.

They also provide education and encouragement for a lifetime preventative and proactive approach to health and wellness by the patient.

Her goals for the department include providing more information about student health and wellness as well as educating students about their own health concerns.

“I have a vision that Student Health Services, along with other departments, can truly make a difference in the lives of our students,” Matikiewicz said. “What they learn on campus can and should be put into action to improve their quality of life. I am excited and hopeful to be a part of creating that for our students and the university.”

Student Health Services provides health care and in-house patient education and will continue to do so. They will also try to empower students to take charge of their health by increasing information around the campus, which will make it easier for students to make responsible choices concerning health and wellness.

“We are also responsible for overseeing the Alcohol and Drug program on campus. This entails distributing federally required

information to the university as well as education on various topics. As the Health Services program grows, we will offer more resources for awareness, education and treatment,” Matikiewicz said.

There is no charge for physical evaluations and insurance is not required. However, students are encouraged to have medical insurance for life-threatening illnesses or special treatments.
