Crazy Race of Commerce ready to take off this March

The Morris Recreation Center, along with Team TWO Girls, is sponsoring an event that Commerce has yet to experience.

Texas A&M University-Commerce’s Dr. Sandra Kimbrough, assistant professor of health & human resources, has paired with Quinlan I.S.D.’s, Gail Loving to host an event that will benefit the United States Association of Blind Athletes.

Set for March 28, The Crazy Race of Commerce (C.R.o.C.) is an event that was influenced by the Great Urban Race that occurs around the country in cities such as Las Vegas, Washington D.C. and San Diego.

The race is more of a scavenger hunt than an actual race, where participants will be given a clue sheet that directs them to certain places in Commerce.

Although this may seem like an easy task, the clue sheet and its missions may take research. Research can be done by phoning a friend, asking people around Commerce or using the Internet on their cell phones.

This race must be completed by foot by teams of two. Public transportation, rides from friends and using equipment like skateboards is prohibited.

“We’re hoping that at least 50 teams will participate in this event and we hope to hold this event every semester or at least once a year,” Dr. Kimbrough said. “I’ve participated in the Great Urban Race a few times and am looking forward to bringing a race similar to that to Commerce.”

Anyone who is 14 or under must be accompanied by an adult and those that are under the age of 18 must have a parent or guardian sign off on their registration form.

Registration can be completed by visiting the campus recreation center’s web site or by filling out the form and delivering to the Morris Recreation Center.

The last day to register is March 28 by 11a.m., but participants are encouraged to register early.

Clue sheets will contain 10 different clues, one of which is mandatory and one that is given the option to skip.

Proof of completion of certain tasks is required to have photos taken by a digital camera, which are not provided. If tasks are not completed in full, a 30-minute deduction will be placed on their total time.

The majority of participants take about an hour to an hour and a half to complete the race, but four hours are given until the race is shut down.

Team members must wear matching T-shirts, have a partner and are suggested to bring $3 in cash for anything the participants may want to buy. The team with the best outfit will win a prize at the end of the race.
