Women’s Soccer takes on St. Mary’s

The women’s soccer team returns home on Sunday to face St. Mary’s University at noon after a midweek 6-0 win against Harding University in Searcy, Ark. The Rattlers have yet to record a win in their season so far, and they could struggle to find goals against a Lions team that has only conceded one goal in six games this season.

St. Mary’s have already dropped games to Lone Star Conference opponents this season. Their first two games against Midwestern State and Abilene Christian both ended in 1-0 losses.

Volleyball has busy few days

Over the span of Thursday, Friday and Saturday of this week, volleyball will have played five matches as their season goes into full swing. After winning home games yesterday against Ouachita Baptist (25-16. 25-15, 25-10) and University of Arkansas-Monticello (25-21, 17-25, 25-13, 25-21), the Lions will play in the Dallas Baptist University Tournament.

Friday, Sept. 11, they play the tournament hosts at 5:00 p.m. The following day, A&M-Commerce has an 11:00 a.m. match against Southern Arkansas and another against Southwest Baptist at 5:00 p.m. The DBU tournament is their last before beginning LSC play on Sept. 17 away to Texas A&M-Kingsville.

“Dallas Baptist is actually one of the toughest places to play because they always have an unbelievable crowd,” head coach Mark Pryor said. “All three of these matches are in our region, and so it’s really important for us to have an opportunity to play well within the region. I look for continued improvement from our young kids, continued leadership from our older kids.”

Pryor said the team hopes to follow a positive trend throughout the season.

“We’re just trying to get better every time we play,” he said. “Sometimes we will, sometimes we won’t, but if we get better more than we don’t then we’re kind of going in the right direction.”

Cross Country

Saturday is the second meet of the season for cross country. West Texas A&M is hosting the Buffalo Stampede in Canyon, Texas. The spot light for the men falls on Tyler Tyndell to copy his efforts in Memphis last weekend when he finished first amongst Lion competitors. For the women, freshman Maci Bradford is looking to build off of a good debut for A&M-Commerce, finishing 67th with a time of 20:39.15 last weekend.

Golf

Starting on Sunday, the A&M-Commerce men’s and women’s golf will begin their fall season. The men travel to Abilene, Texas for the Charles Coody West Texas Intercollegiate tournament. Senior Eric Westerman placed second among Lion participants in this competition last year. The women play in the DBU Golf Classic in Dallas.
