Some Beach

There is a “problem” on campus that needs immediate attention! Please everyone, listen. There is not enough lighting on campus. We all need to be worried of the creepy man waiting in the bushes for lonely women to walk by.

I originally intended to write an article on campus lighting, but I can’t do it. First of all, this campus (compared to others) is fairly safe. Every once in awhile you hear of some muggings, but that happens in any community. Second, I do not want to insult the intelligence of our student body with common knowledge pieces that waste time.

We all know the cafeteria food is below par. Of course the dorms aren’t ideal living situations; no campus in the world has luxurious living quarters. What are you expecting: recliners, flat screen TV’s? We already get cable and the Internet; what else could you ask for?

People complain so much about this campus. “There isn’t enough lighting,” they say. “The food is bad,” they say. “Blah blah blah,” they say.

But you know what I never hear enough? No one ever complains about the amazing education that one gets here. No one whines about the overqualified professors that could easily get a better, higher paying, position at a bigger campus. We are forgetting why we are here. It isn’t for the food, or the comfy beds; it is for the education.

Hey, the town is not well lit because this is a small town. Small towns don’t have a lot of lights, but they do have stars that you can see. Most of us come from bigger cities and expect this town to provide like Austin, Denton or Dallas would, but what is happening is people spend so much time complaining, they never see all the great things about this community and this campus.

People are missing the family environment that this small campus provides. First year students never get the chance to make those lifetime friends because they spend it focused on making Commerce a miserable place to live.

I challenge anyone to find a bigger school where they can impact the community like one can here. There are so many opportunities to give back to the school, the town and each other. We have events like Open Mic Nights, Songwriter Shows, Bois D’arc Bash, Senior Centers, and many more opportunities to get involved and let this town know that we don’t only care about the campus.

Yet, here we are.

You should be reading an article about how this campus needs more lights so it is safer, how the beds are uncomfortable or how toilet seats are cold when you first sit on them. I promise you, Students of Texas A&M University-Commerce, I will never insult your intelligence with another article like that.

The world is collapsing around us, and we are focused on cold green beans and dirty light bulbs. Warlords are being hired in Afghanistan; the recession has been declared “Mission Accomplished,” Barack Obama called Kanye West a “jackass”. Any of those stories is more important and interesting than cold tile on bare feet or the potholes on the streets.

Thank you, Commerce, TX for being my home for three plus years.
