Lions look for first win

Football

The Texas A&M University-Commerce football team may not have a win four games into the season, but they have definitely proved themselves to be an interesting team to watch. After a heartbreaking loss to last season’s Lone Star Conference champions Abilene Christian University, the Lions traveled to Eastern New Mexico, scored 56 points, and lost.

“Any one of our players would trade any of their stats for a win,” quarterback Adam Farkes, who threw for a school-record 441 yards and had six total touchdowns said.

A&M-Commerce’s defense, which has kept them in most games this season, let up an astonishing 76 points after allowing only 14 to ACU. Head coach Guy Morriss had a few thoughts on why the defense broke down.

“I think that there was a bit of letdown after the loss to ACU,” he said. “In pre-game warm-ups we looked flat. But, if you look at time of possession, the defense has been out there for six games. We know they’ll bounce back the next game.”

A&M-Commerce plays the first of three home games this Saturday against the University of Central Oklahoma. Central Oklahoma is 1-3, one of only two teams in the North Division of the LSC with a win.

Morriss isn’t expecting anything new from UCO.

“They run a 4-3 defense, just like most teams in our conference,” he said. “I’m focused on getting the three components of our team- offense, defense, and special teams- on the same page.”

If the Lions can do that, they might just be able to pull of their first win of the season in front of a home crowd.

Volleyball

Texas A&M University-Commerce’s Lone star co-players of the week, Naomi Mays and Lauren Flynn are set to lead the team in a game against Eastern New Mexico University in volleyball this Saturday, Sept. 26, 2009. The game is set to be held in the A&M- Commerce Field House at 2:00 p.m. Eastern New Mexico is 0-3 in conference games.

“It was a big opportunity to beat them last year there,” senior setter Perla Faudoa said. “If we play hard we will get good results. I hope my team does the best they can do.”

Faudoa’s teammate said physical ability is not the only thing the Lions will need to succeed.

“Winning takes playing hard and mental toughness to get the job done,” Mays said. “We know what we need to do.” Lions will have to bounce back after Thursday’s loss to No. 7 West Texas A&M University three sets to none.

“Eastern New Mexico University is a much improved team; they are bigger and more athletic,” Head coach Mark Pryor said. “Playing at home will help us continue to improve so we can accomplish our goals.”

In the loss to West Texas, the lions played to a full house. 750 fans came out for JAM the Gym, the most in school’s history.

Golf

Both the men’s and women’s teams are in action starting Sunday, Sept. 27. The men are heading to San Antonio, Texas, for the Bruce Williams Memorial Invitational. St. Mary’s University is hosting the event.

Women’s golf is also traveling a lengthy distance to Amarillo, Texas. West Texas A&M is hosting the Lady Buff Stampede. Both tournaments run through Sept. 29.
