Madden champion retains title

Video gamers from all around Texas A&M University Commerce took part in the annual Madden video game tournament. The Madden gaming franchise is the No. 1 selling football game in the United States and has spawned a reality TV show on an actual Madden tournament called “Madden Nation”.

The event was held on Sept. 23, at the Morris Recreation Center.

Intramural sports supervisor Myranda was in charge of the event this year.

“We get all kinds of players. Guys, girls, hardcore guys. All levels can play,” Myranda said.

There were 36 A&M Commerce students involved in the event. There were two brackets, Greek and individual. The winners of the two brackets would play each other at the end to determine a Madden champion.

There were two minute quarters and the contestants could use any team they wanted to. The default roster would be used so no player would be able to use any created players of their own. Onside kicks were not allowed unless a player was losing in the second half.

Last year’s champion, senior Randon Green, won the event again.

“I won last year. That’s my face on the poster,” Green said. Last year Green used the Philadelphia Eagles to take the Madden belt. He said he decided to change things up this year and use the 2008 Super Bowl champion New York Giants.

The Dallas Cowboys and the New York Giants were among the popular teams that the contestants were using. The team used the most was the current Super Bowl Champion Pittsburgh Steelers.
