Greeks prepare for KD Sing Song

As this year’s Kappa Delta Sing Song approaches, sororities and fraternities on campus are preparing their routines for the competition.

KD Sing Song is an annual event hosted by the Kappa Delta sorority in which various Greek organizations perform song and dance routines and compete against one another to benefit charities.

“Sing Song is an event that we hold every year to raise money for one of our national philanthropies, Prevent Child Abuse America,” Kappa Delta President Jewell Malick said. “Twenty percent of our proceeds will go to the national organization and the other 80 percent supports a local organization that works to prevent child abuse.”

According to their website – www.preventchildabuse.org – Prevent Child Abuse (PCA) America’s mission is to, “Prevent the abuse and neglect of our nation’s children and includes all forms of abuse and neglect, whether physical, sexual, educational or emotional.”

According to Kappa Delta Vice President of Public Relations April Parker, last year’s Sing Song was a bit of a learning experience for her.

“Last year’s Sing Song was both enlightening and entertaining,” Parker said. “It broadened my understanding of the horrible pain and suffering that is inflicted upon children through abuse and neglect.”

According to Parker, this is a major event for her and the rest of the Kappa Delta members.

“Sing Song is our Shamrock event and will help reach many children in the hopes of preventing child abuse,” she said.

Parker said she is looking forward to this year’s Sing Song and is hoping it will be even better than last year’s.

“As a Kappa Delta, it is an honor for me to carry on this wonderful tradition which began many years ago,” she said. “I anticipate a significant increase in participation and support from our campus for this year’s performance.”

Malick said she is also looking forward to seeing all the participants’ routines.

“I am very excited for this year because we expect a great turnout and a great performance by our reigning champions, Gamma Phi Beta,” she said. “Other participants include Alpha Phi, Kappa Alpha Order, Sigma Chi Fraternity, Delta Tau Delta, and many more.”

The Gamma Phi Beta sorority won the competition last year, but according to Gamma Phi Beta President Kayla Morgan, it was no easy task.

“It can be stressful at times with practices and rehearsals and crazy choreography, but it is overall so much fun,” Morgan said. “Last year, we won the competition with our trip across the country. Our songs told the story of the places we were visiting on our way to New York. It was really fun and energetic.”

Morgan also said she looks forward to how unpredictable the event it is.

“It’s going to be a really neat show,” she said. “I feel like a lot of the people who are competing are going to come up with a lot of unique ideas, so I’m excited to see what they come up with. The best thing about Sing Song is that you never know what you’re going to get.”

In past years, the Alpha Phi sorority has been one of the groups to compete in Sing Song. However, according to senior Alpha Phi Nina Derrick, they will not be performing this year because many sisters had “prior obligations.” Hence, they do not have a enough members to compete.

“I’m really upset that we can’t do Sing Song because I was really pumped up for singing this year,” Derrick said. “I’ve never been in Sing Song, so I was pretty excited about it.”

Sing Song is scheduled for Nov. 18 at 7:00 p.m. in the Ferguson Social Sciences Building. Tickets can be purchased in advance from a Kappa Delta for $3 or at the door for $5.
