Money not only factor in deciding on college major

I think that the most hated question among college students, more notably ones who are undecided majors, is, “what do you want to do with your life?”

College is a scary time for a lot of us.  When we’re in high school, or even as young as middle school, we begin pondering what it is we want to be when we grow up.

We begin to discover our passions, and we begin to shape our lives around those.

I never could decide what I wanted to do with my life, simply because I had found so many things that I loved to do.  During my time in high school, I discovered my love for photography, writing, technology and playing music.  My time was spent trying to juggle all of these interests, while at the same time prioritizing them.

When I came to college, I made the biggest mistake a freshman can make.  I immediately went where I thought I could make the most money.  I started out in business, and after a semester quickly realized that I disliked it. I continued to make this mistake and jumped in to computer science, however, it took me an entire year to realize that computer science was, once again, not the career for me.

And then I discovered journalism. I had done two years of journalism in high school, and when I changed majors – for the third time – I told myself, “I can do this. I will like this.”

My parents were skeptical, because of the lack of career choices in journalism, but I pushed forward anyway, insisting that it was what I wanted to do.

I’m glad that I did that, because I’ve never been happier with what I’m doing, and I feel that I have finally found my place in life.  I know that this is what I want to do.

Do yourself a favor when deciding what you want to do with your life – do what you’re passionate about. If you do what you love, money doesn’t matter. Okay, okay, so money does matter, but I think that if you do what you love, it doesn’t matter as much to you, because it’s not all about the money.  The more you love what you do, the more it will pay off.
