NACWC to host free Thanksgiving dinner

The National Association of Colored Women’s Club (NACWC) is hosting an Annual Thanksgiving Social from 2-6 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 20 at the Baptist Student Ministries building on Lee Street for students, faculty and members of the community who want to celebrate the holiday, along with the food it brings.

“This is our way of giving back to the community and those that are less fortunate,” Stephanie Morgan, senior human resource management major and Vice President of NACWC, said.  “It’s a time when all of my sisters and other people we meet in the community and other students we know come together and have a good time.  It is one of my favorite events, if not my favorite.”

Latasha Hawkins, President of NACWC, explained what the club was and their involvement in putting together the social.

“We’re a Christian based organization and we are mostly community service,” Hawkins said. “The Thanksgiving Social is a great deal and something we like doing to reach out. This is for the whole community, to reach out to those who are not able to get a Thanksgiving dinner or anything like that.

35 active NACWC members will be assisting in the event.

“For those (NACWC members) who can’t cook , we are helping each other,” Hawkins said. “It’s split up individually of who can cook and who can’t, but we all have something to bring.”

The event is free to the public with no cost or donation.  Turkeys were donated by Brookshires and eating utensils and plates were donated by Sonic.

“We always have a good turnout, ” Hawkins said. “We always have plenty of food.”
