With the polls closed and the election season finished the student body at Texas A&M University-Commerce has elected Johnny Kirkpatrick as the new Student Government Association President. Kirkpatrick won the election over his opponent Jared Peckham with the votes totaling 632 to 264, finalizing the victory for Kirkpatrick.
While dashed by his shortcomings in the election, Peckham believes that the students are in good hands with his opponent.
“I do believe that the students are lucky in that there is no wrong vote in these elections,” Peckham said. “[Kirkpatrick] deserves to be here and will dutifully fulfill [his] responsibilities. Of that, I have no doubt.”
Accompanied with the new Vice President Senate Chair, Sarah Cunningham and Vice President of Senate Affairs Caleb Culver, Kirkpatrick will take to the presidential office on the last school day of the spring semester.
Kirkpatrick hopes to bring about a brighter future for SGA and the student body through tweaking the SGA’s methods of functioning.
“Some goals I have set as SGA President are to continue to increase the presence of SGA even more on campus,” he said. “This has been a goal of Student Government already, so I feel we should continue this to better serve the students. Another goal I have is to make the transition process easier between senates. In the past it has been a problem continuing different projects that require a year or more to complete, mainly because there was no transition period, and there are no documents or files handed to the next person to take that position.”
