17 Lions earn Top 20 finishes in Arlington

 

ARLINGTON – A&M-Commerce wrapped up competition at the 2012 Bobby Lane Invitatational, hosted by UT-Arlington at Maverick Stadium last weekend. The Lion men had a strong showing, competing against a handful of some of the top teams in the region, with 17 competitors finishing among the top-20 in 10 different events, including four top-10 finishers.

The top performer of the day for A&M-Commerce was Isaac Chelimo, who notched a runner-up finish in the 3,000 meter steeplechase with a time of 9:22.10. Chelimo, who also placed 14th in the 800 meter run (1:57.18), edged out teammate Raymond Mata, who finished 12th in the steeplechase (10:31.50).

A handful of distance runners also had solid showings on the afternoon with Tyler Hemenwayfinishing 13th in the 800 meter run (1:56.90). Ross Hicksrecorded a top-10 finish in the 1,500 meter run (4:04.95) while Fredrick Kipsang(15:30.99) and Alex Kimp(15:34.77) placing 14th and 16th respectively in the 5,000 meter run.

Among the A&M-Commerce sprinters, Demetrius Holmeshighlighted the afternoon with an eighth-place finish in the 400 meter hurdles (55.83). A trio of Lions finished in the top-20 in the 400 meter dash, led by Ravi Dubose‘s 15th-place showing (49.03), followed by Ernest Rickett(49.13) in 16th and Adam Gary(49.41) finishing 20th.

The Lion jumpers and throwers also had their share of impressive performances, led by Khalil Henrytying for fourth in the high jump with a career-best leap of 2.00 meters. Charles Powell(6.73m) and Anthony Harris(6.49m) placed 13th and 18th respectively in the long jump with Daniel Diarecording a pair of top-20 showings, placing 16th in the hammer throw (32.76m) and 18th in the discus (44.88m).

Up next for A&M-Commerce is a trip to Austin for the Texas Relays, one of the top collegiate meets in the country. A handful of Lions will make the trip to Mike A. Meyers Stadium, with full results being posted as they become available at LionAthletics.com.
