Sitting in the cafeteria, with the televisions blaring Headline News network (HLN), the annoying only child of CNN that thinks it’s a ‘big boy’ now, one would expect the latest and most pressing news to be presented.
So, in a situation where, for instance, the G20 forum made a decision to inject over $1 trillion to the world economy, HLN would be live from London showing replays of Gordon Brown making the statement which could lead to the end of this global recession. This was not the case.
Instead, what stimulating, thought provoking piece of news did they have on their screens?
Nadya Suleman, aka Octomom, and more comments about her ‘wrong doings’ and the doctor that decided to put eight lives in the safety of her womb.
It seems as though all news networks cannot go through the day without uttering the term ‘Octomom’ and telling their viewers who have nothing better to do on weekday afternoons to send in their opinions.
My question is, why do we care? What is so interesting about this ‘nutcase’ and her eight additions to make a family of 14?
There are many who believe they have the answer to the question as to why the American public seems to be so captivated by this, so here are a few answers as to why no one should be.
Some say Ms. Suleman is crazy and only seeking attention. Okay, so what? There is a really simple solution to that: don’t give it to her.
It is amazing to hear these talking heads on CNN, Fox News, and the like complain that Suleman only wants a spot in the limelight while they are giving her exactly that.
If they are really worried about her want for attention, she would not be getting any of it. So, how about we don’t?
Another argument that carries a little more punch is that, since Suleman cannot support herself and these 14 kids, taxpayer’s money will have to be used.
‘I don’t want my money going towards that crazy woman’ all the penny pinchers say. Do we really know where all the tax money goes anyways?
Did you know that anyone who bought a diamond between the years 1991 and 2002 could have unwittingly contributed to the Sierra Leone Civil War which resulted in the deaths of thousands of innocent civilians and child soldiers? Probably not, but no one cared.
Rebel forces would capture diamond mines and sell their findings to purchase weapons and war materials, but no one ever asked where their pretty ring came from.
There are tons of different programs, funds, and other, usually, worthless causes taxpayer money goes to that no one knows about.
If people are going to complain about this instance of tax money use, then they might as well put tracking devices on all their dollars and cents to see where else it goes.
Then there’s an even more convincing argument coming from all the caring parents.
They just seem to have an issue with the conditions the Octo-spawn will be growing up in, and that comes from the previous two arguments.
Both media sensationalism and growing up on welfare can have undesirable effects on children. Who wants to see that? On the other hand, why worry about it? They are not your kids.
Obviously, if a problem does arrive, then something needs to be done. There are social workers for that, so it’s their job to worry about the kids.
Let them do it, let the workers who have been charged with the task of looking out for children in dire situations monitor the activities of this Octomom.
However, if parents just cannot help themselves in worrying about the helpless children of this earth, how about the thousands of starving children in Sudan?
Does anyone ever see them on HLN’s evening show Issues with Jane Velez-Mitchell?
Instead of featuring ‘experts’ giving their opinions about Suleman, why doesn’t she feature UNICEF workers talking about the 10-year-olds in Uganda being given AK-47s and told to shoot on site?
At least the Octomom’s children have a solid roof over their heads and caring people willing to help.
The Octomom story should be forgotten by the media and general public and left to the social workers.
Call it heartless, apathetic, or whatever you want, but I just don’t care anymore and neither should you.
By keeping her in the media spotlight, Suleman is getting exactly what she wants.
Stop probing about whether your money is going to this ‘lunatic’ or we might find out a few other things that just should not be told to the general public for the sake of their own sanity.
And if you really want to show your care for children, look up how many children are being used to fight real battles with real guns and really being killed.
For those of you who are saying that by writing this opinion piece I am also giving the Octomom attention, you are correct.
However, my purpose is to draw attention to this worthless and over used news story so that it may never be heard again.
In fact, if you wish, consider this the last newspaper article involving the Octomom.
Because, honestly, who cares?!?!
