One night at a Marc Broussard concert in Dallas, I had the privelege of meeting this talented young lady. Dara Joy from the Fort Worth area, has one of those voices that makes you wish you could sing. Her faith has played a huge part in her life, which is evident in the words she sings. You can check out her music on MySpace at www.myspace.com/darajoymaclean.
Cody Giles: Is Dara Joy your real name?
Dara Joy: Yes, and Joy is actually my middle name, my full name is Dara Joy Maclean.
CG: How long have you been singing?
DJ: I’ve been singing pretty much since I could talk, but passionately pursuing a career in music and ministry since I was 13.
CG: What is your greatest inspiration?
DJ: Lots of people say this, but for real, 100 percent, God is my greatest inspiration. He is the only way I know how to live, breathe and truly be inspired and empowered to go beyond what I reason as possible.
CG: Do you write all of your music?
DJ: Yes. I love to write, it’s becoming a hobby and so exciting to discover what will come out next. I love to co write as well, everyone has so much untapped creativity on the inside of them and the more you draw on it, the better the music/lyrics will be.
CG: Who do most people say you sound most like?
DJ: I’ve been compared to Lauryn and Alicia before, but most recently to Colbie Calliat. I’m not always sure exactly what it is people hear and compare, but I hope it has something to do with soul and vocal purity. I’ve already stated my love of those artists, so it’s a compliment for sure.
CG: What song would you wat to be singing when Jesus comes back?
DJ: I would be singing a medley of “Lord You’re Beautiful” and Jonny Lang’s rendition of ‘That Great Day.”
CG: What is your life philosophy?
DJ: Every day is new, God’s love is everlasting and through Him, anything and everything is possible.
CG: In a nutshell, why do you sing?
DJ: Because it’s why I was created, it defines my very existence. It’s my passion and I’m in love with what I get to do for a living.
CG: What band would you rate as the greatest of all time?
DJ: The Beatles. No one compares.
