Poet visits Commerce

Denise Duhamel, a nationally known poet, will be on campus April 24 to help celebrate the launch of the Spring 2008 issue of The Mayo Review, the creative arts magazine of Texas A&M University-Commerce.Duhamel has published over 10 books of poetry and has been featured four times in Best American Poetry. Her most recent book Two by Two is the winner of Binghamton University’s Milt Kessler Book Award.At 2 p.m., Duhamel will be holding a master class in poetry. Enrollment to the class is limited and selective. Those wishing to be a part of the master class must submit five poems. Those students selected will need to present a valid student ID; the cost for non-student participants will be $100. Duhamel will also hold a reading of her works open to the public at 5 p.m. in the Founder’s Lounge on campus. A reception launching the new issue of The Mayo Review will follow her reading and will feature readings from some of the authors included in the Spring 2008 issue. This reception is also open to the public.Also to celebrate the magazine’s latest issue, Cowhill Express, located on the main square in downtown Commerce, will be hosting an “open mic” poetry reading for the public from 7-9 p.m. on April 17.
