Breaking up is hard to do

Stop. If you do not like male genitals, please do not even spend a dime on seeing this movie or reading this review. Now that’s out of the way, let’s talk about the new film, “Forgetting Sarah Marshall”.Peter Bretter (Jason Segel) has recently been dumped by his super-hot, super-famous girlfriend, Sarah Marshall (Kristen Bell). Sulking in the aftermath of a five-and-a-half year relationship Peter decides to go to Hawaii to relax. But his relaxation is short-lived when he finds out his ex-girlfriend and her new boyfriend, Aldous Snow, are staying at the same resort he is. Utterly devastated, Peter continues his emotional tirade until he meets with up with the hotel receptionist, Rachel Jansen (Mila Kunis). With Rachel, Peter is able to let loose, sing vampire opera ballads, fall off cliffs and make Sarah Marshall jealous of his new relationship. “Forgetting Sarah Marshall” is a predictable, romantic comedy. You can pretty much guess how the entire movie plays out after the first fifteen minutes. What surprise you are all the filler scenes that explicate the plot. In these scenes, absurd, ludicrous, outrageous moments are exchanged for the pure pleasure of making the audience laugh. These excess absurdities may be interwoven to satisfy the younger generation of audience members but are still enjoyed by men and women of all ages. Jason Segel made his screenwriting debut with this outlandish comedy. You may know him from his role on “How I Met Your Mother”. This guy bears it all, literally and figuratively. He plays a splendid self-absorbed musician very convincingly to which many men can relate to.Kristen Bell and Mila Kunis both catch your eye on the screen. Their physical beauty captures you more than their acting but who’s to say how they got their jobs? What matters is that they play off each other very well and should be considered for more roles like this. A muppet vampire rock opera at the end of the film made it completely worth while. There is just something about using puppets to portray our feelings that captivate audience members of all ages to open up and explore feelings. Peter Bretter uses such techniques as an emotional outlet to get him through his rough breakup with Sarah Marshall. In closing, don’t go into this movie thinking it is going to be your typical Romantic Comedy because it’s not. It is a laugh-out-loud ridiculous film that can easily upset many viewers. If you’re up to the challenge, I dare you to sit through “Forgetting Sarah Marshall” without cringing.
