On Oct. 30, 2008 the Texas A&M-Commerce Chapter of Collegiate FFA held its Invitational FFA Leadership Development Event, their major service event for the fall.
The FFA students in Dr. Bob Williams’ AGED 371 – Youth Leadership and Development class, facilitated the events, locating judges and ensuring smooth operation for the contest. The event included FFA teams from eleven high schools including, Caddo Mills, Chisum, Collinsville, Community, Ennis, Harmony, Hughes Springs, McKinney, Saltillo, Simms and Union Grove.
The contests included Public Relations, Junior and Senior FFA Chapter Conducting, Skills Demonstration, Ag Issues, FFA Radio, Junior and Senior FFA Quiz, Junior and Senior FFA Creed Speaking and Job Interview.
These events are designed to develop leadership skills and public speaking skills by allowing the FFA students to perform while being judged as if presenting for a general audience.
These skill events allow the students to become proficient in presenting information in an understandable format while also building confidence needed to succeed post graduation. Between contests the students enjoyed hotdogs and games provided by Collegiate FFA.
Post contest, FFA students were given the opportunity to enjoy a movie, ‘Astronaut,’ in the Planetarium, located in the Science Building on the TAMU-C campus. Plaques were presented to the top three FFA chapters in each category.
A Sweepstakes plaque for the FFA chapter earning the most overall points was awarded to Harmony. The Collegiate FFA Chapter at TAMU-C will also assist in facilitating the Area FFA Career Development Events during the spring semester.
