The annual Feast of Carols event will not be taking place this year; however, a progressive dinner concert is what Texas A&M University-Commerce has in store for this holiday season.
“The Three Stars over Commerce, a Holiday Celebration,” will be an exhibition of the newest buildings on campus: Science Building, Alumni Center and Sam Rayburn Memorial Student Center.
“The event will begin with a reception in the Alumni Center, followed by a tour, buffet and concert at the Rayburn Student Center, and conclude with a show on the Christmas Star at the Planetarium. There will be live music at every venue,” Dr. Chris White, music department head said.
The concert will be presented three times on Dec. 5, the first beginning at 5:30 p.m. by invitation only Public showings will begin at 6:15 p.m., and at 7 p.m.
According to White, the plan is to prepare for shifts of 75 patrons. The Office of Alumni Relations, Office of University Advancement, Golden Leos and Music Department are collaborating to host the event.
The Bluebonnet Community Chorus will also be participating in this concert event.
“The Bluebonnet Chorus is a celebration in music of the integration of the community and university. They will be strolling carolers,” White said.
According to White, the audience can expect to see small instrumental ensembles, including a brass choir performing outside, a woodwind ensemble at the Alumni Center and a horn choir performing at the Science Building. There will also be strolling vocal quartets performing Christmas carols and a 20-minute program performed by the University Chorale.
“This event is a great time to display the wonderful progress our university is making. Each building promotes learning, success, community, and pride. During this event you can be one of the first to tour the buildings and discover all that A&M-Commerce has to offer,” Stephanie Peebles, special events coordinator said.
According to Peebles, Santa Claus will be making a special appearance at “The Three Stars over Commerce, a Holiday Celebration.” Vice President Bob Brown’s collection of Santa Claus figures will be exhibited at the Alumni Center. At the Planetarium, Santa Claus will be making a personal appearance.
The dinner of the evening will be a buffet of heavy hors d’eurves. This buffet will be served during the Chorale concert. Regular tickets will be $25, and student tickets will be $10.
For those wondering whether or not Feast of Carols will return to A&M-Commerce next holiday season, the jury is still out.
“The Feast of Carols was a long-standing tradition that brought donors, community members, faculty and students together. More than just a holiday event, the Feast of Carols became a recognition of the legacy and celebration of the heritage of East Texas State University, now A&M-Commerce.
“The absence of any event in its place would create a cultural vacuum,” White said.
