Both the Texas A&M University-Commerce men’s and the women’s cross country teams placed very well in the Lone Star Conference Cross Country Championships.
The men finished in third place behind strong efforts from Tyler Tyndell, Cody Hughes, and Robert Reed. Tyndell earned his second straight all-Lone Star Conference honors with a fourth place finish. Hughes and Reed also won all-LSC honors after they finished back to back in seventh and an eighth place. Hughes was making his LSC championship debut. “I was very pleased with the men’s team as a whole. They all ran very competitively,” said coach Rich Lawrence.
The men’s team also got strong efforts from junior Gerardo Delafunete and sophomore Brandon Womack, who finished in 19th and 40th, respectively.
The men’s third place finish is one spot higher than last year’s finish. Abilene Christian won their 18th straight men’s title, and Tarleton State beat out A&M-Commerce for second place by a single point.
The women placed 10th overall. Sophomore Katie Donovan ran well enough to finish in 23rd place, a great improvement on her 50th place finish in last year’s LSC championship. “Donovan ran very well,” Lawrence said. The rest of the women’s team finished within ten places of each other. Freshman Gabrielle Greer placed 59th, redshirt freshman Mindy Solorio finished in 64th , freshman Savannah Brookins finished in 65th and junior Holly Langford placed 69th.
The next meet for the Lions is the NCAA South Central Regional on Nov. 8 at the University of Incarnate Word. This will be the team’s second trip the UIW, where they competed on Sept. 27.
