Elections for Student Government Association (SGA) will be held March 21 and 22. A change in leadership is coming for the organization, with Johnny Kirkpatrick and Jared Peckham campaigning for president.
Students will have a chance to vote online through their myLeo accounts for individuals who are running for various offices, including Sarah Cunningham, who is running for vice president senate chair. While each candidate brings forth their own experience, Cunningham believes that her time working with the Morris Recreation Center sets her apart from the other candidates. Maha Rizvi and Michael Martinez are her opponents in the race.
“Working at the MRC for the past four years over the Special Event Program has given me the skills of communication, problem solving, professional, marketing, and teamwork that make me a dedicated worker to serve the student body,” Cunningham said. “In all my activities at TAMU-Commerce, I always look at what is best for the Student Body as a whole.”
Although attempts to contact the candidates have been made, only a few have commented on their campaign. More information on the candidates will be released as it comes in.
The Student Government Association works as a voice for the student body, and bridges the gap between the students and the administration.
“Part of our change is to be an advocacy group,” Current Vice President Senate Chair Adam Haney said. “SGA is the official liaison between the student body and the faculty and staff. Students bring their questions and concerns to us and we channel those through to the appropriate people and make sure it actually gets answered.”
The East Texan will continue to bring forth information regarding the election as the process continues.
