Child safety alert cancelled

University Police department officals are cancelling further investigations involving a report recieved last Tuesday, Nov. 28, alleging the solicitation of sexual activity from a child.

The report stated that a white male approached a child on an on-campus playground. The subject then asked the child several questions about her age and name, the solicited the child for sexual activity.

After further review, the UPD determined the report was falsified.

“During the University Police Department’s investigation of this incident it was determined that part of the report was fabricated and no crime was committed; therefore, UPD is cancelling its investigation,” said Jason Bone, UPD crime information officer in a statement

“Since it may prevent a crime from being committed against children in the future, UPD encourages all parents to follow the safety information posted in the alert. The department would like to thank everyone for the multiple tips that were phoned in.”

The UPD offered the following advice to prevent unwanted activity of this nature:

•Never allow children to play without adult supervision.

•Immediately report all suspicious persons near areas that children play.

•Keep an up to date photograph of your child in digital format. A program like KidPrint is available at many police departments including the Commerce Police Department.

Attend an educational program. (Stranger Danger and KidPrint was orginally scheduled on-campus for Nov. 30 but due to inclement weather was cancelled. Plans are for the program to be rescheduled.)
