Lion women have strong winter break

The Texas A&M University-Commerce Lions women’s team did not suffer through the cold winter break, going 6-0 to improve their overall record to 12-7.

The Lions also set a new school record with seven straight wins.

“Anytime you set a school record, its an honor for your kids,” said Womens Head Basketball Coach Denny Downing.

The winning streak began on Dec. 9 with a 79-59 home win over Eastern New Mexico.

Junior Katedria Mosley led the way for the Lions recording her fourth double-double on the season with 15 points and 11 rebounds.

The Lions won their second straight home game with a 92-84 victory over Texas-Tyler on Dec. 19.

Kanani Marshal drained six three-pointers throughout the night to lead the way for the Lions with 24 points.

Needing five three pointers on the night to break the career three point record, Marshal hit her 143rd three to break the record of 142 set in 94′ by Michelle Simmons.

The women finished off 2006 in good fashion on Dec. 31 with another home win over East Texas Baptist 84-71.

Mosley led the way for the Lions recording her third straight double-double with 18 points and 11 rebounds.

Marshall contributed 20 points with four more three-pointers to extend her record.

The women won their fourth consecutive game to start the new year with a 72-64 victory over Tarleton State.

The Lions defense forced 21 turnovers on the night and turned those turnoevers into 25 points.

Britney Jordan went seven of seven from the field and scored a team high 20 points for the game. Marshal added another 18.

Next up for the Lions was an away game against Midwestern State on Jan. 6.

The Lions shot 61.8% from the field to help extend their winning streak to five games with the 83-57 victory.

Marshal, Mosley, Jordan and Dawn Montgomery all scored double figures on the night, while the Lions went on a 17-0 run in the second half to secure the win.

The women came back home after a two game road trip to face Texas Womens on Jan. 11.

Jordan led the way for the Lions with a season-high 24 points while having eight rebounds and eight assists to slip past Texas Womens 72-66 and earned another win in the streak. The Lions capped off their record seven game win streak with an 80-51 victory over Texas A&M University-Kingsville on Jan. 13.

Jordan recorded her second double-double on the season with 16 points and 10 assists.

She was also named Lone Star Conference North Division Player of the Week for her play.

Dominee Evans led the team in scoring with 17 points, while Montgomery and Marshal added to the double digit scorers with 14 and 12.

The Lions offense shot 57.1% from the field on the night.

Defense contributed to the win as well as the Lions were able to outscore the Kingsville offense 22-0 on turnovers in the first half.

Marshal and Montgomery helped secure the game in the second half with their lights out shooting from beyond the arc.

Montgomery went 4-4 on three-pointers for the game.

The women then traveled to Northeastern State to open the LSC North Division play and have their record seven game win streak snapped with a 69-61 loss.

While the Lions had Marshal, Mosley and Jordan all score in double figures, NSU went on an 11-1 run to start the second half and never looked back.

The break seemed to be what the Lions needed. The team leads the LSC in scoring with 73.4 points per game while defeating four of those last seven opponents by double figures.

Downing said, “We are taking good shots, and having the right people take the right shots.”

While the offense is playing well, the defense is ranked 11th in the conference allowing 65.2 points per game.

“We need to defend better, said Downing, its been frustrating with our inability to be consistent.”

Saturday, the women will play host to Southeasten Okla. in an LSC North Division game at 2 pm. The first 100 fans to attend the game will receive a T-shirt for the “fill the fieldhouse” afternoon event.
