Texas A&M-Commerce track & field teams participated at the McMurry Relays in Abilene on April 5, 2007, with the men finishing 4th place overall, while the women finished 7th.
For the men, Jacob Almond finished 7th place in both the 200-meter dash (23.06 seconds), and also in the 400-meter dash (51.21 seconds).
Leonard Jackson ran the 400-meter dash, and set a new season-best time, with a time of 50.55 seconds and a 4th place finish.
Kyle Thompson finished 2nd place in both the 110 and 400-meter hurdles. In the 110 hurdles, he finished with a time of 14.98 seconds. In his first time running the 400-meter hurdles this spring, Thompson finished in 56.91 seconds and ran the 200-meter dash with a time of 24.67 seconds.
Alfredo Soto ran in the 1500-meter and 5000-meter run, with finishes of 2nd and 4th, respectively. Soto finished the 1500 in 4:17.03, and finished the 5000 in 16:27.52. His time in the 5000 set a new season-best, eclipsing his previous season-best by nearly 24 seconds.
Gerardo Delafuente also ran in both the 1500 and 5000, with finishes of 6th and 5th, respectively. Delafuente finished the 1500 in 4:24.90, while he finished the 5000 in 17:21.46.
Leslie White participated in both the high jump and javelin field events. In the high jump, White finished 3rd place, by clearing the 6’2″ (1.88 meters) height. In javelin, White threw 142’10” (43.53 meters), for a 10th place finish.
The 4×400-meter relay ‘A’ team composed of Jackson, Thompson, Greg Strickland and Almond and finished 1st place, with a time of 3:22.01, which is a team-best for the 2007 spring season.
Larry Gilbert, who has been a strong performer in the throwing events, was the top finisher among collegiate athletes. In the shot put event, Gilbert threw 50’11” (15.52 meters), while he threw a new season-best in the discus event with a 159’11” (48.74 meters) throw. In the discus event, Gilbert was less than an inch of the distance required to provisionally qualify for the NCAA National Track & Field Championship Meet.
For the women, Katie Barthold ran in the 100-meter dash for the first time this spring, and finished 7th place overall, with a time of 13.15 seconds.
Esther Fernandez participated in the 800-meter run, and set a new season-best time in the event. She set her new season-best, with a 6th place finish and time of 2:39.60.
The A&M-Commerce women showed a strong presence in the throwing events at the Relays, as well. They were lead by Rachel Redding, who set new season-best throws in both the discus and hammer events.
In the discus, Redding threw 125’0″ (38.19 meters). In the hammer, Redding threw 136’6″ (41.62 meters), both season bests.
Britney Fisher threw in both the shot put and discus events, with a throw of 33’9.50″ (10.30 meters) in shot put, and 128’1″ (39.03 meters) in the discus. Fisher’s throw in the discus event also allowed for a 1st place finish overall in the event.
Caylin Taylor also joined Fisher in the shot put and discus events, with a throw of 31’10.25″ (9.71 meters) in shot put, and 116’6″ (35.51 meters) in discus.
