Sophomore Blake Worden earned his second-straight all-tournament honors, leading the Texas A&M-Commerce men’s golf team to a tie for third place finish at the 2007 Lone Star Conference Men’s Golf Championship at the Bear Creek Golf Club in Irving, Texas. The Rowlett native shot a 54-hole total of two over-par 218 (71-74-73) to finish fifth overall.
The Lions tied for third with Abilene Christian, shooting a 901(299-296-306). Northeastern State won its third consecutive team title with an 867 (295-288-301) for a 17-stroke victory over runner up Central Oklahoma. Senior Andy Carter, who tied for 19th with an 11-over par 227, joined Worden in the top 20.
For Carter, it is his first top-20 finish of his career. NSU’s Joby Dutcher took medalist honors with a one-stroke victory and 54-hole total of 211 (75-66-70). He edged out Mitch Boles of UCO and Matt Trammell of Cameron, who both shot 212.
Carter was one of the top players in the field in par three and in par five scoring. He shot a one-under par on par three holes and five under par on par five holes for the fourth-best performance on each hole. Carter finished the tournament with 11 birdies.
Freshman Chase Johnson shot a 74 for his lowest round on the final day of the 54-hole tournament to finish 22nd overall with a 228 (77-77-74). He made an 11-place improvement on the final day.
Also making strides on the final day was sophomore Pinky Hartline, who shot a 230 (77-77-76) and 14-over par for a tie for 26th place finish overall. Rounding out the Lions lineup was freshman Brian Pearce, who tied for 44th with a 240 (80-77-83).
A possible berth to the upcoming NCAA Regionals is next for the Lions. The selection show will be on Friday, April 27 at 4 p.m. Regional play will get underway on May 7 at the Robert Trent Jones Trail at the Shoals in Florence, Ala. Texas A&M-Commerce last made a regional appearance in 2001.
Sophomore Jamie Gililland overcame the rainy conditions of Bear Creek Golf Club in Irving, Texas to shoot her best round of the season since October, posting an 80 in the final round of the Lone Star Conference Women’s Golf Championship to lead the Texas A&M-Commerce women’s golf team to a sixth-place finish. Gililland shot a 30-over par and two-day total of 174 (94-80) as the Lions posted a team total of 708 (353-355).
The team and individual title were both decided by a single stroke. Cameron edged Central Oklahoma for the team title, 642-to-643.
The Bronchos’ Mari Suursalu took medalist honors with a one-stroke victory and two-day total of 151 (77-74) and seven-over par.
The Lady Aggies’ Janel Bailey earned runner-up honors with a 152 (73-79) and eight-over par and teammate Renee Breeze finished third with a 154 (77-77) and ten over par.
For the Lions, sophomore Ali Tanner was tied for 23rd with a 31-over par and two-day total of 175 (82-93).
Senior Adi Attaway-Bryant wrapped up a successful career with a 27th-place finish and two-day total of 178 (87-91) and freshman Heather Pantalion was 28th with a 181 (90-91) to round out the A&M-Commerce lineup.
